80 years have passed but we still don´t know how to quantize gravity. How does one make progress in a field in which there is neither a theory nor experiment? Is this research still science? In my talk I will discuss whether mathematical consistency provides sufficient guidance, what the role of aesthetic criteria is in theory development, and how we can make progress.
