Decades of cognitive research repeatedly confirmed that time spent on task is essential for deep learning. During the last two decades we have experimented with various methods of lecture augmentation to encourage more time on task for our students: computer-graded homework, chat-rooms, virtual lectures and virtual university classes, flipped classroom, multimedia explorations, clickers, weekly exams, e-books, smart-books, java apps, html5 apps, … This talk will discuss and describe what work and what did not, and why.
