Many materials exhibit an adiabatic temperature change when external parameters like magnetic field, electric field, or pressure are varied. These caloric effects bear prospects for realizing cooling devices with superior efficiency. I will report on new highly sensitive measurements of the magneto-caloric effect in various materials [1]. Our high frequency modulation technique allows for the investigation of small volume and even thin film samples opening the way for a combinatorial materials approach for finding magnetic materials with large magnetocaloric effect. Latest results on electro-caloric measurements in relaxor dielectric materials give evidence for strong aging effects.
