A quantum impurity embedded in a bosonic bath is one of the oldest models for studying dissipation and decoherence. However, it is also a very accurate description of many useful quantum technologies, from trapped ions to plasmonic cavities, passing through superconducting quantum circuits. In this colloqium I will review a number of theoretical results from our group regarding the immersion of one, two and infinitely many such impurities, focusing not on dissipation, but on the coherent properties of such systems, applications to the control and manipulation of photons and understanding of fundamental notions, such as causality.
