The perfect (nv) defect: Making sens(or) of diamond

I will provide a general and accessible introduction to the nitrogen-vacancy color centers in diamond, explain why these have been a focus of intense research in recent years, and will also describe several applications and the direction our group and various collaborators have been pursuing at Berkeley, Mainz, in the desert of Negev, and elsewhere.
