If string theory describes the real world, we need a low-energy model arising from an explicit string compactification that is consistent with our observations in particle physics and cosmology. In this talk I shall present recent progress towards such a realistic model in the context of type IIB string theory with D-branes at singularities. In particular, I am interested in constructing models that allow for moduli stabilisation and a realistic D-brane construction close to the Standard Model, satisfying all known consistency conditions. The phenomenology of these D-brane models is briefly discussed. This talk is based on the following papers: 1206.5237, 1304.0022, 1304.2771.
