For many years it has been thought that high precision measurements of the properties and interactions of particles in the charm sector could reveal physics beyond the standard model. Recent studies of mixing and CP violation in D mesons have raised hopes, but also revealed serious difficulties in the interpretation of these expectations. Prospects for measurements by existing and planned experiments to help understand this picture will be presented.
