A cloud of cold atoms in contact with the modes of an optical ring resonator is maybe the most fundamental system for investigating the interaction between light and atoms. It is astounding how such a simple scenario offers a wealth of fascinating collective phenomena ranging from classical self organization and Mie scattering to Dicke quantum phase transitions. I will discuss some of them together with the current activities in Tübingen.
