We will present different techniques for implementing quantum simulations of relativistic quantum systems in trapped ions. We will describe how to realize the Dirac equation for a free relativistic particle and observe its jittering motion, the so-called 'Zitterbewegung'. We will also discuss how to engineer relativistic potentials that scatter the simulated Dirac particles and reproduce the Klein paradox. Furthermore, we will propose how to engineer the quantum simulation of the Majorana equation and unphysical operations such as charge conjugation and time reversal. Finally, we will present an outlook of what can be expected in the near future in the burgeoning field of quantum simulations.
