Most of the observables that have been measured at the B physics experiments fall into the class of exclusive hadronic decays. A quantitative theoretical understanding of the underlying strong-interaction effects is both challenging and mandatory for an unambiguous interpretation of the collected data. I will review different strategies to address this problem, present recent conceptual developments and discuss some unresolved puzzles which may provide hints to CP violating phases beyond the CKM mechanism.
