Chiral symmetry and lattice gauge theory are the two primary tools for understanding non-perturbative effects in quantum field theory. However there is a clash between these approaches connected with quantum mechanical anomalies. Because of this we presently have no theoretically clean non-perturbative formulation for the standard model. I review this unsolved problem and some speculations for overcoming it.
