Measuring with Light

Laser based measurement techniques are ideal for many tasks. During this talk we present two specific projects that our group has been working on in recent years: The first deals with measuring the temperature profile in the Ocean based on a LIDAR technique. It is based on Brillouin scattering and has potential impact in climate studies and oceanography.
The second is concerned with cooling and trapping neutral mercury. We will discuss the primary goals of the two experiments and give details on the experimental status.
