This year the Nobel Prize in physics has been awarded to Eric Cornell, Carl Wieman and Wolfgang Ketterle for their pioneering experiments on Bose-Einstein condensed atomic gases. In this talk I will try to give an overview of the physics involved in these early experiments and to provide some more background information on why the Nobel committee has come to this exciting decision.
