After a short introduction into the world of quarks, leptons and their interactions in the framework of the Standard Model of particle physics I will describe how with the help of quantum fluctuations one can probe the short distance physics at scales10-19 – 10-18 m by studying rare and CP symmetry violating decays of K and B mesons that live at scales 10-15 m and 10-16 m, respectively. In particular I will discuss how the Standard Model predictions for these decays are altered in the case of the most popular extensions of the Standard Model like Supersymmetry and Little Higgs models. The important role of this field in the era of the Large Hadron Collider at CERN will be emphasized.
